A Dogie Door Gone Wrong

It took awhile for me to understand why my Florida Room had a hole through the wall. A square hole that had a piece of fiberglass tacked up on the outside in haphazard fashion and another piece of scrap lumber tacked up on the inside. I found the answer when talking to a neighbor. One of Sylvia's previous owners had cut the hole for his dog to go in and out. A dogie door gone wrong to say the least

To fix this problem from the outside we decided to re-side the entire room with Platanium T 1-11 siding plwood. The Home Depot had it and at a good price. After carefully measuring we were off to have the eight by eleven sheets cut to fit. It took 3 sheets and the guys in the lumber department were more then happy to cut them into odd sizes so we could assemble them like a jigsaw puzzle back home. We also picked up a couple of pressure treated 2 x 2's, some silicone caulk, and a good primer. Back home it was time to start putting our puzzle together . We used liquid nails and screws to attach the pieces of T1-11 starting at the base.

We made sure the bottom was sealed well with waterproof sealer.. later we would add a 2x2 to add strength and additional sealant. We continued to add the pre-cut pieces until we had a complete new exterior wall.

By the end of day one the new panels were up, sealed, and ready to be primed, and painted.

Day two, we add the 2x2's to the base and just under the windows to help with water run off from the sills. We paid extra attention to using plenty of water seal caulk on these as we didn't want water getting behind our new siding. With all the joints sealed with caulk it was on to the primer. This primer was fantastic it went on quick, and required only one coat. Look to KLZ2 Latex primer if you're looking for a great product.

An hour later it was ready for paint. To match the rest of the home we used our Ash Blonde Behr Ultra. It went on smooth and fast and covered in one coat. We also spent a little time to finish out the scalloped metal trim along the top down to the pallet fence. I'll finish out that trim in the spring when the plants are still dormant.

With winter just around the corner Sylvia is dressed in a new look... We've done a lot of work on the exterior appearance of this Vintage gal... It's been a good year for her and for me.. Once winter is over it's on to more projects both inside and out. I'm looking forward to new skirting and new house style windows in 2018. We'll be moving inside for projects over the winter.. so stay tuned.
